In 2007, I found myself in a valley. I was 25 years old, married 4 years to the best guy ever, and awaiting the next step, parenthood. The Lord chose to make that journey a bit of a challenge. During that year I became pregnant 3 times and on January 1st, 2008 I had nothing to show for it. We had 3 miscarriages that year. I was angry, bitter and in complete despair. All I could think was how much having a baby would make my life better.
In 2008, we moved to northern Manitoba where Derek was pastoring a small church. God answered our prayers and gave us a beautiful son. Dominic was everything we could have hoped for.
I am ashamed to say that my daily quiet time was forgotten and time for Bible Study was replaced with the duties of motherhood.
In 2010 we found ourselves, expecting our second child and living in a new community. We moved to Yellowknife, NWT to pastor a church up there. Within the first 2 months, I was a mother of 2 children in diapers, living in a new, remote community with winter (and darkness) settling in. The first two years of life in Yellowknife, were some of the loneliest and darkest of my life. During those two years my Bible remained in a drawer on my nightstand, collecting dust. I isolated myself from the people in our wonderful church, refusing to accept the love and friendship they wanted to offer me. I was MISERABLE.
At the end of 2012, I heard that Kay Arthur was coming to Break Forth Edmonton in January 2013. I was very familiar with her and her teachings on Bible Study, but had never taken the opportunity to fully immerse myself in it. Derek suggested I go with some of the ladies in the church that were attending Break Forth. I was resistant, but Derek was INSISTENT! So I signed up for Break Forth and Kay’s Thursday Intensive all-day workshop. The week leading up to Break Forth was horrible. My life was rather chaotic and I was hesitant to leave the kids for the weekend. 2 hours before I was to leave for the airport, I told Derek, “Maybe I shouldn’t go.”
“NO!,” he said, “you are going! Don’t worry about us, go and find God again.”
The day of the workshop arrived, I got there early to get a good seat. Miss Kay came around the room and introduced herself to many of the people there. I was thrilled to meet her and tell her that I was totally new to this method of Bible Study and that I was excited to be there. She was so gracious to give me a few minutes of her time, I will never forget that.
The whole day was a completely eye-opening experience for me. I loved every minute of it. We studied the book of Haggai that morning and the words just jumped off the page into my brain. God’s Word was coming alive! After lunch Miss Kay was teaching, and there was something she said, that I will never forget. “God gave you 66 books, how many do you think He expects you to know!” BOOM! That was it. At that moment, I knew. I have a responsibility to know My God and His Word.
With tears running down my eyes, I ran to the Precept book table, bought The NISS book Isaiah: Face to Face with a Holy God and over the next 6 months, I studied Isaiah. Since then I have studied, Nehemiah, Matthew, 1 John, Ephesians and now I’m working on Genesis. . . seven down, 59 to go!
Derek noticed a change in me the moment I returned home. I convinced him we should go to Precept in Chattanooga and become trained Bible Study leaders. We attended the Fall training sessions and we both left with confidence that The Inductive Study Method was the only way to study the Bible and that our church needed to learn this method and discover truth for themselves.
Currently, Derek is preaching using the Inductive Method and the people in our church are totally engaged in it! One of our congregants who is in her late 70’s says, “I’ve been studying the Bible for over 60 years and it is finally coming ALIVE!”
Because of Inductive Bible Study, my life is not the same. I used to be an unhappy, stay at home mother living in spiritual mediocrity, and now I am a woman with a passion to study God’s Word and help others discover truth so that they know, that they know, that they know. Thank you Precept Ministries for your faithfulness, through it God has opened my eyes and changed my life. My prayer is that we would be able to bring this method of teaching to our northern city of Yellowknife and that is would captivate hearts and change lives as it did mine.
Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of the soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and the intentions of man.
Jodi Lee K., Yellowknife, NWT
It is through your prayers and God's faithfulness that we are on the verge of expanding the work of Precept like never before in the history of the Ministry. God gave us the vision to reach 30,000 new Canadians with Inductive Bible study. And we can see that it is truly His vision.
Have we met our goal? Not yet. But we are well on our way, and I know God will continue to be faithful as we follow His leading. Thank you for hearing God's call and partnering with us in this incredible opportunity.
Blessed by your partnership,
Mark Sheldrake, National Director
