“In my travels, I have seen many things, but one thing I cannot escape is the cry of Africa. The people there are crying out to know God more through His Word.” —Stuart Kemsley, South Africa
Stuart and Teresa Kemsley and their boys journeyed to an impoverished land to help expand Precept in Kenya. Despite the conditions there, they chose to live in the region for three months. Stuart trained pastors and leaders, conducted numerous Inductive Bible Study Workshops, and introduced Precept materials to local churches.
They daily sought the Lord to open doors and help them establish a structured Precept Team who will continue their work in an area that is so desperate for God and His Word. Stuart and Teresa write:
“How do we begin to describe and explain what it does to us, to see people living with almost nothing? We look around and see needs everywhere! We thought we had seen the worst in South Africa, but back home is nothing like this. The poverty and the conditions the people have to live in would absolutely break your heart. It’s more than just their physical needs that is so heart-breaking, but even more are their spiritual needs.
Thika is an area where the people live in such poverty. We will never again complain about the roads back home! There are no roads in the rural areas here. You have to own a 4-wheel drive vehicle or you could be in real trouble. The Lord has been so gracious to us, in that every time we have travelled into these areas it hasn’t rained. If it rains, one has to walk; cars cannot make it through the mud and sludge everywhere.
When we travel you long to see something that will uplift your spirit, but no matter where we looked we saw broken down houses, shanties, children in the mud and dirt. Chickens, goats and pigs are on the roads and even in their tiny homes.
The church where we had our first training was just a tin structure. There was no laid floor, just dirt and rocks. And yet, this building is such a blessing, because not too long ago they were meeting under a tree with big rocks for chairs. To see these people who have nothing worship is an amazing experience. There is a true contentment and fulfilment in Christ because Christ is all they have! These people have encouraged us like no one else. We truly witnessed their faith in the midst of unbelievable circumstances where there is no earthly hope, but they have their eyes fixed on the Only Hope!
The Pastor invited other nearby churches and Stuart was able to encourage them as well and introduce them to the Inductive Bible Study Method. They were amazed at what they started to discover when they slowed down and noticed the details recorded in scripture.
We also spent time working in a Christian school in a slum area. The school is built on a trash heap. Children have no food except for the meals they are given at the school. Their clothes sometimes hang in threads and they wear shoes with no soles. Many of them have no home or roof over their heads, and at night they sleep under whatever shelter they can find.
We are thrilled to be able to send to the school the Discover 4 Yourself children’s studies, but the needs are still great. We have barely begun to send the needed resources and Bible Study materials for these people.
Today we see tremendous growth as a result of our time there. We are incredibly grateful to God for the team of dedicated people that He has chosen to serve Him there. Please pray for them, and for those that God will add to the team.
We’re reminded of Paul’s words in Philippians, words we have seen put into practice by the local believers. “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:11-13).
“God is doing a great work in South Africa. We are blessed to be part of the Precept Team that is impacting the lives of people around the world!” –Stuart and Teresa Kemsley, South Africa
We are thrilled to see the work in this region continue to grow. Wycliffe Asigi will soon be the first full-time Precept staff member in Kenya. We also plan to open a Precept office in Nairobi. Countless lives are being changed and His Word is going forth in a profound way to build the Kingdom.
Prayerfully consider your gift today to continue the work of establishing people in God’s precious Word.
It is through your prayers and God's faithfulness that we are on the verge of expanding the work of Precept like never before in the history of the Ministry. God gave us the vision to reach 30,000 new Canadians with Inductive Bible study. And we can see that it is truly His vision.
Have we met our goal? Not yet. But we are well on our way, and I know God will continue to be faithful as we follow His leading. Thank you for hearing God's call and partnering with us in this incredible opportunity.
Blessed by your partnership,
Mark Sheldrake, National Director
